I came to app-controlled toys because of a long-distance relationship: my partner and I were 15,000 km apart, and I had no idea what would work for us. I researched for a long time before buying anything, and most reviews skipped the part I cared about most: how the app behaves when someone in another country is in control. That's what this guide focuses on, along with which toy fits which situation.
Why app control is worth it
A regular vibrator has a button and a few speeds. Connect a toy to your phone and you get the following.
👫 Partner control from anywhere
You can hand control of your toy to a partner sitting next to you or on the other side of the world. They get a live control panel on their phone, with an intensity slider, preset patterns and custom vibrations.
🎨 Custom vibration patterns
You draw your own patterns by tracing a finger across the screen, save as many as you like and switch between them mid-session. You can also download patterns other users have shared, which no physical button can match.
🎵 Music Sync
The app can sync vibrations to whatever music your phone is playing, from Spotify, Apple Music or any other source. The toy pulses with the rhythm and changes as the song does, which works best with bass-heavy tracks.
🌍 Long-distance intimacy
For couples apart, this is the main reason to buy. Your partner can control your toy during a video call or send a surprise vibration during your day, and in sync mode two toys mirror each other in real time. Distance doesn't matter as long as both phones are online.
🤫 Discreet control
No fumbling with tiny buttons or audible clicks: you change the intensity, switch patterns or stop with a swipe on your phone.
⏰ Alarm and scheduled vibrations
You can set the toy to vibrate as a wake-up alarm or schedule a session in advance, which only a connected toy can do.
So, is app control worth it?
If you'll only ever use a vibrator alone in bed, a toy without an app may be all you need. If you want partner control, long-distance play or custom patterns, the app changes what the toy can do. The Lovense app is free with no subscription, so the toy is the only cost.
How the Lovense app works
Every Lovense toy uses the same free app, Lovense Remote. Here's what it does and how setup works.
-
Download the free app
Search "Lovense Remote" on the App Store or Google Play; the listing shows the minimum iOS or Android version. The app is free to download and use, with no subscription or premium tier. Your partner installs the same app.
-
Turn on the toy and pair it over Bluetooth
Press the toy's power button, open the app and tap "+". The app finds nearby Lovense toys and pairs on its own in about 15 seconds, and the toy remembers the pairing next time.
-
Control it yourself or invite a partner
On your own you get the full set of controls: intensity slider, preset patterns, pattern editor, music sync and alarms. To hand over control, share a control link or add your partner by username, and they get the same controls on their phone, wherever they are.
-
More features
Once connected, you can run several toys at once, use the app's built-in voice and video chat, sync two Lovense toys so they mirror each other, and set vibrations to react to sound, such as your partner's voice.
One app for every toy
Lovense uses one app for its whole range, so several Lovense toys can be controlled from one screen, even at the same time, and your partner needs only that one app for any of them.
6 app-controlled toys by category
Lovense makes more than 30 toys, so the right one depends on what you want. These six each fit a specific use.
Lovense Lush 4: the default choice
Best overall app-controlled toyThe Lush 4 is one of the best-known app-controlled vibrators. It's an insertable egg with a curved antenna that stays outside the body. Compared with the Lush 3, Lovense gives it a longer range (up to 105 m outdoors against 75 m), a quieter low setting (36 dB against 38) and more battery.
- Lovense gives it the longest range of the Lush line: up to 105 m outdoors
- 36 dB at the lowest setting, by Lovense's figure, so quiet enough for discreet wear
- Up to 350 minutes on a charge
- IPX7, so fine in the bath or shower
- Unlimited range partner control through the free app
- Made to wear, and stays in place with snug underwear
- Insertable, so not ideal if you only want clitoral stimulation
- Higher price point than the Lush 3 ($129 vs $119)
Lovense Nora ($99) + Max 2 ($99): a synced pair for couples
Best for CouplesThe Nora is a rabbit vibrator with a rotating head and a vibrating clitoral arm. The Max 2 is a male masturbator with vibration and air-pump contractions. Paired in the app, the two sync: when one partner uses their toy, the other toy responds in real time, wherever each of you is.
- Real-time sync: each toy responds to the other
- Nora: rotating head and vibrating clitoral arm for blended stimulation
- Max 2: vibration and air-pump contractions
- Both support full app control and long-distance partner mode
- Built-in video/voice chat in the Lovense app for simultaneous use
- The Max 2's battery is shorter (95 to 215 min, against 190 to 245 for the Nora)
- Buying both is a significant investment ($198 total)
Lovense Ferri: a magnetic panty vibrator
Best Discreet / WearableThe Ferri is a small external vibrator that holds onto your underwear with a magnet. It sits over the clitoris and stays put when you walk, sit or bend. It's small and invisible under clothes, though it's louder than the Lush 4, so it suits noisy places better than quiet ones.
- The magnet holds it firmly to your underwear
- Small and light, with no part to insert
- Invisible under clothing
- Full app control with unlimited-range partner mode
- External stimulation only
- Louder than the Lush 4
- Less powerful than larger toys like the Domi 2
Lovense Exomoon: the entry-level pick
Best Budget PickThe Exomoon is a lipstick-sized clitoral vibrator with the same app features as Lovense's dearer toys, including partner control, custom patterns and music sync, for about half the price of the Lush 4. If you want to try app control without spending much, start here.
- $69, one of the cheapest Lovense toys (only the $59 Ambi costs less)
- Full app functionality including partner control and music sync
- Looks like a lipstick, so it's easy to carry
- Small enough for any bag or pocket
- IPX7 and body-safe silicone
- Battery of 70 to 177 min, best for shorter sessions
- External only, and not made to wear like the Ferri or the Lush
- Less powerful than the more expensive toys
Lovense Solace Pro: automatic stroker
Best for MenThe Solace Pro is an automatic male masturbator: it strokes on its own, so your hands are free, and through the app your partner can set the speed and depth from anywhere. The stroking is what separates it from vibrating toys, with up to 300 strokes a minute.
- Automatic stroking, hands-free
- Adjustable stroke depth and speed via app
- Partner can control thrusting remotely from anywhere
- Compatible with sync mode for interactive couples play
- Inner sleeve is removable and replaceable
- $199, one of the more expensive Lovense toys
- IPX4 only, so keep it away from water
- Larger and less portable than simpler toys
Lovense Domi 2: a powerful app-controlled wand
Most versatile, most powerfulThe Domi 2 is a mini wand, and power is why people buy it. The flexible neck follows your body and the broad head gives deep, rumbly vibrations, for clitoral stimulation, body massage or anywhere else you want strong vibration, all controlled through the app.
- Very strong vibrations
- Flexible neck conforms to body contours
- 300 to 360 minutes of battery
- Full app control with partner mode and music sync
- Works as a sex toy and as a body massager
- Larger than eggs and bullets, and not made to wear
- External use only
- Loud, and too strong for some people on the top settings

One app for all of them
Every toy in this table runs on the free Lovense Remote app, so several toys share one screen and your partner needs only that one app.
What to look for
With this many options, these are the things to weigh.
📶 Bluetooth and range
Lovense publishes ranges for the Lush line: up to 105 m outdoors for the Lush 4, 93 m for the Lush Mini and 75 m for the Lush 3. Indoors, walls cut that down. For long-distance control the range matters little, because Bluetooth only links your phone to the toy and the rest goes over the internet.
🔋 Battery Life
By Lovense's figures, batteries run from about an hour (the Vulse) to 14 hours (the Solace Pro); among vibrators, the Domi 2 and Lush 4 reach about six. For wear through a date night you want three hours or more; for a solo session, an hour or two is plenty. A full charge takes 40 to 160 minutes, depending on the toy.
🔇 Noise Level
If you'll wear the toy in public or use it with others in the house, noise matters. Lovense publishes 36 dB at the lowest setting for the Lush 4 and Lush Mini and 33 dB for the Lush Anal. The Ferri is louder than the Lush 4, and the Domi 2 is loud. Most Lovense toys are quiet at low settings and differ a lot higher up.
💧 Waterproofing
Most Lovense toys are IPX7, meaning they survive 30 minutes under a metre of water, so the bath, the shower and rinsing under the tap are all fine. Some are IPX6 (Nora, Max 2, Domi 2, Gravity), which handles splashes and rinsing but not the bath, and the Solace and Solace Pro are only IPX4.
📱 Which app features you need
Every Lovense toy gets partner control, custom patterns and music sync. Some features depend on the toy: sync mode, with two toys mirroring each other, works best with the Nora and Max 2, and stroke-speed control only applies to the Solace and Solace Pro.
💰 Price and value
Prices run from $59 (Ambi) to $699 (Sex Machine), with most toys between $99 and $129, where battery life is good and the designs are well proven. The $59 and $69 toys have the full app; they give up some battery and power for the lower price.
Which toy for which situation
Here's which toy fits the most common situations.
🧘 Solo play at home
On your own, with privacy, power and battery matter most and noise doesn't. Custom patterns and music sync are the fun part, and you can save as many patterns as you like.
👫 Couples in the same room
Your partner controls the vibrations while you're together, during foreplay, a massage or sex. Handing control to someone right next to you adds a bit of power play, and they can watch your reactions and adjust.
🌍 Long-distance relationship
You live in different cities or countries. App control over the internet keeps some physical intimacy going, the built-in video chat adds the face-to-face part, and sync mode lets two toys mirror each other.
If it's your first app-controlled toy
If you're not sure what you want, the Lush 4 ($129) covers the most ground: solo use, couples play, long distance and discreet wear. If budget comes first, the Exomoon ($69) gives you the full app for much less.
